In case you haven’t already heard, there will be no on-site registration for San Diego Comic-Con 2013 this year. This information comes from email surveys sent out to attendees that Comic-Con International contacted about filling out a survey. Is this good? Is this bad? There are varying opinions on the matter, but despite the fact that on-site pre-registration gives thousands of people peace of mind by being able to lock down their registration a year in advance, I think it’s a good thing. It means that people who go to Comic-Con can enjoy Comic-Con by not spending however many mornings of the con waiting in line in hopes of snagging a registration. It begins a horrible cycle where attendees are forced to spend a good portion of Comic-Con in line to get tickets for the next Comic-Con, where they will just repeat the same process ad infinitum (or at least until they no longer want to go to Comic-Con). Who wants to go to a comic convention that’s just about standing in line for the next comic convention? Why would you want to go to that event? I want to stand in long lines for things that will happen at THIS convention!
Instead, Comic-Con will be offering up the opportunity for 2012 attendees to register online in advance of other people. When it happens, how many tickets will be available at that time, and whether you would be able to register people who didn’t go to Comic-Con 2012 in addition to yourself is not known at this time. But you can be sure it will be a limited amount, just as it was with the on-site sales last year. Tickets will NOT sell out to just those with 2012 badges. The whole concept of Comic-Con selling online is to give the widest number of people an equal chance at the available tickets rather than offering them up to the select few who already have gone before. Once those advance 2012 attendee tickets have been sold, general attendance tickets will go on sale. When either registration date will take place, no one but Comic-Con knows. Of course, the rules, limitations, and availability could change at any time over the next year, so keep an eye on the official San Diego Comic-Con site and here, as I will be posting whatever information I can find as soon as I can give it to you.
We’re less than a month away, folks. Expect more and more announcements to start rolling out here and on Twitter and Facebook. I also hope to create a comprehensive events guide for gatherings that take place outside of the official event, so keep an eye out for that as more information becomes available.
